Caring for your Purifier
Here are some simple things you can do to ensure your air purifier is giving you the best performance:
- Regularly clean the filters inside. I clean our purifiers every week.
- Regularly clean the air quality sensors. Almost all good purifiers come with sensors. Please clean them at least once a month. More on this later on this page.
- Use the purifiers in automatic fan mode. If you have a manual air purifier (like mine), use them on medium fan mode.
The Right Fan Settings
Running your air purifier at full fan leads to poor results. For catching the tiniest of particles, you need to run your purifier on slower fan speeds. If you have a manual purifier, run it at full till PM2.5 falls to 200 µg/m3, then on medium till 100, then low to achieve 30 µg/m3 or lower.
As is evident from the graph above, high fan speed is excellent for bringing PM levels down to the 200/300 range in under an hour (when the outside is 500/1000 or worse). However, at high fan speeds, you cannot achieve better purification than this. To get to the 100/100 level you need to have the fan on medium. Ideally, setting the purifier to low at 100 should take you to 30 or below. However, in real life scenarios, doors are opening all the time and bad air is coming in from the outside. In such a situation, you will find yourself switching to high whenever levels exceed 200 in the room, and back to medium. An air purifier with automatic fan control will ideally make this adjustments on its own.
