First, consider the size of your room. The bigger the room, more the air inside it. All of that air needs to pass through the air filter, multiple times, in order to be cleaned up completely. Most manufacturers have a room size recommendation.

Surprisingly enough, the amount of pollution in the air does not impact how fast an air purifier cleans air. This is because of the nature of HEPA filters. So, just because Delhi is so polluted right now, doesn’t mean you need to buy bigger purifiers. It does mean that your filters will choke up faster, so go with purifiers that have cheaper replacement filters.

Some Tips when choosing a purifier

  • Focus on purifiers with a larger number of filters.
  • Make sure filter replacements are easily available, and affordable.
  • The purifier should be easy to clean.
  • Go for purifiers with built in particulate matter monitors.
  • Prefer those with automatic fan control. These run faster when catching the coarser particles, then slow down to catch the small stuff.
  • Ionisers, UV filters, other active components do not really help much with pollution.
  • Some purifiers will tell you when it is time to replace their filters. That is a good thing.
  • Purifier power consumption isn’t much, so that should not be a consideration for you.
  • Purifiers are noisy. You have to sleep with that thing running all night. So noise is an important consideration. Most manufacturers will disclose the noise their purifiers make, in decibels.

Do you need an air purifier?

Do you have air conditioners in your house, and live in Delhi/NCR? If yes, then you should also afford air purifiers for yourself. If you live in any of the major Indian cities, or have PM levels in excess of 200 µg/m3, then purifiers aren’t a luxury any more.
